How it all started
In 1970, Douglas M. Curtiss graduated from Williams College and decided to take a summer job helping his roommate’s father open a new security systems business in Stamford, Connecticut, called Sonitrol. His summer job turned into an opportunity for Doug to learn the security business from the ground up, first as a management trainee in technical sales and central station operations and later as general manager of Sonitrol’s Norwalk offices.
Two years after starting with Sonitrol, at the age of 24, Doug purchased his own franchise, Sonitrol Security Systems of Hartford, which is now Sonitrol New England. Many of our long-term customers still remember Doug with a tape recorder slung over his shoulder playing recordings of live burglaries in process, as part of his presentation of Sonitrol’s unique security services.
Telephone systems: Keeping our clients connected 1981
In 1981, Doug recognized the similarities between security and telephone systems, and the need in New England for local service in both areas. Today, Sonitrol New England’s telecommunications division is a large portion of our business, supplying leading-edge NEC products business telecommunications solutions.
We provide telephone systems and communications solutions to state and local governments as well as private businesses. We have held the Connecticut state contract for Telecommunications Equipment and Cabling since 1984, allowing our Connecticut customers to avoid an open bid process and consulting fees.
Sonitrol New England is made up of three local divisions—providing quick-response, reliable security services:
- Sonitrol Security Systems of Hartford: Serving central, north and southeastern Connecticut since 1972.
- Sonitrol Security of Western Massachusetts: Serving western Massachusetts from Springfield to the Berkshires since 1981.
- Sonitrol of Rhode Island: serving the entire state of Rhode Island since 2003.
